A Dash of Fun to Life

Monday Me’s

Add a Dash of Fun

We all have tasks that we are trying to avoid (negative feelings sucks!) But you can’t let these emotions control your actions. Today, we’re going to explore how to make tasks funner so that you can enjoy the process more

Today’s Topics:

  • Make Life Fun

  • Make-it-Fun Framework

  • Question for you

Make Life Fun

Play is our first energiser. Life is stressful. Play makes it fun. If we can integrate the spirit of play into our lives, we’ll feel better — and do more too.

Ali Abdaal

I’m a huge gamer, and I’ve always thought about how I can make daily, mundane tasks gamified. Life is stressful enough, why not make it fun while you’re at it?

Hate studying but love action? Blast some Pirates of the Caribbean music and imbibe Jack Sparrow’s spirit.

Hate working out but love achievements? Create a habit tracker to document all of the times you have worked out.

Find ways that you find fun and fulfilling and implement it to enjoy life a little more.

Make-it-Fun Framework

Cleaning can suck, but add some fun to it to make it enjoyable!

Making unenjoyable tasks more fun can transform your daily routine and reduce the feeling of dread associated with these activities. By incorporating personal strategies, you can make these tasks more enjoyable and fulfilling. Here's a framework based on my personal approach to achieving this.

Make-it-Fun Framework:

1. Identify Unenjoyable Tasks

Examples: Cleaning and organizing, starting long-term projects like newsletters (calling myself out here)

2. Mindset and Attitude

Pause and Reflect: Sit and pause to feel your emotions, identifying and naming any negative feelings. Use an emotion word bank if necessary. (Fearful, scared, avoidant, etc)

Remind Yourself of Benefits: Think about the long-term benefits and how accomplishing the task will make you feel. For instance, a cleaner bathroom sparks joy and gives a sense of accomplishment.

3. Incorporate Fun Elements

Identify what you can "multitask" with: Listen to podcasts to feel productive and entertained or play music for a fun karaoke session while cleaning. Identify things that are fun that you can multitask with and can make you feel good

Rewards: Allow yourself to play games or indulge in another enjoyable activity as a reward after completing the task. (Use timers to avoid getting carried away for activities) Food is a great reward too 😉

4. Create a Positive Environment

Tools and Gadgets: Use tools that make tasks easier and more enjoyable, like an electric cleaning brush or ergonomic work setup.

Organization Methods: Keep your workspace tidy and organized to signify the end of work and allow yourself to relax guilt-free.

5. Break Down Tasks

Checklists: Use checklists for newer tasks or routines, the more tasks you have written down for certain routines the more you fully feel the experience of the routine. Your brain doesn't need to think about what it needs to do next.

6. Time Management and Scheduling

Routine Maintenance: Schedule tasks regularly, like weekly cleaning, to prevent overwhelming buildup and make the task more manageable.

Mindset Reframe: Reframe your mindset to see minor upkeep as easier and more beneficial than dealing with major issues later.

7. Accountability and Support

Checklists as Accountability: Use checklists to track progress and maintain accountability. While you may not involve others, checklists can serve as a self-accountability tool. Use your partners or close friends/family to be you accountability partner -- people love seeing you succeed.

8. Reflect and Adjust

Emotional Reflection: Write down your emotions in an a note taking app. I've been using an app called Finch and it's like Tamagotchi but for self-care/habit building (Use my invite code: B722YR9ZG3 please 🤣)

Weekly Reflections: Document daily wins and evaluate if new implementations sparked joy, aligning your actions with long-term goals.

Question for you to journal

What are you avoiding to do?
How can you make it funner?

It’s normal to have feelings of wanting to avoid a task, but you can’t let that emotion control your actions

Write out: What you’ve been avoiding + Devise different ways to make it more enjoyable

That’s all for this Monday Me. Reply to this e-mail any findings you have and let me know what topics you would like me to explore!

In the meantime, Stay Smiling 😊
